My New Holland Report - What We Found Today!
Posted by: snavelyorama Date posted: 02/25/2008 06:02:17 AM
Hi everyone...

As planned we went to the sale today unsure of what to expect or see but I was pleasantly surprised at the condition of the majority of the horses. There was really only one Belgian gelding that I saw that really was very thin but otherwise seemed in fine condition. There was another Belgian that has a hoof issue but it looked as though with good hoof care and some TLC he would be okay. Now for the cows, there was one cow that was hopping, yes hopping - looked like perhaps a dislocated back hip. I only got a glimpse of it and it looked like someone was taking care of it. The tack sale didn't have much to speak of. The belgians went for between %300 - $700. A gorgeous Percheron mare, four years old, looked like a Friesian, full mane and tail went for $400. The highest price horse - a show horse with points went for about $3700. Some TN Walkers went for about $400 each. There were two groups of Alpacas that went for $150 each if you bought all five. I have to say that almost every horse being sold had it's owner there who spoke about the horse and had all paperwork in order for their horses.
I'll go again, would love to go when they do the draft sales (as I'm a draft person). But overall, even the auctioneer, a very personable Amish fellow was very nice and he even let the owners speak on behalf of their horses, stating also another time that it's the respsonsibility of sale-goers to see for themselves what goes on at New Holland and not to necessarily take the word of the rescues that show the horrible conditions. He even said that yes, conditions were like that before but they have made a lot of changes since and are happy to answer any questions about any horses. Where the horses were kept were also very clean and all fresh bedding down, everyone had hay and water to drink.

If I had a place to quarantine a horse and a horse trailer, I probably would have come home with something today. For those who have never gone or went before but were shocked at conditions. Please go again, I had a good experience and would consider buying from there if the conditions at home here allowed.

Happy Trails to all and thank you to those couple of folks who responded to my previous post. I really appreciate the feedback.

Andrea
