Andrea,
I don't know where you are located, however, I work for a Conservation District and spend a fair amount of time dealing with livestock erosion issues. I would suggest calling your local Conservation District - they will be glad to provide you with free tech assistance, perhaps even cost-share funding if you were interested in constructing a "sacrifice area" with gravel, geotextile, and such.
Generally speaking, If you have a choice of fields/paddocks, try to use the highest and driest available, especially on wet days. If your paddocks adjoin the barn, a guttering system with an outlet pipe to a grassy area (outside of the paddock) will prevent LARGE amounts of roof water from causing gullies (and mud) in the barnyard. Also, the more manure you can remove from these areas, the less mud will form. Depending on the layout of your property, if your field is taking on water from an uphill area, a grassed diversion or drain tile may be in order.
Remember, mud is a combination of manure, water, and traffic. Removing any one (preferably two) of these factors will go a long way in solving your problems. |
