RE: Question For Briar Patch...

We don't really get into the composting of it ourselves. We try to find farmers that will take it for free (not charge us) and compost it for their use. Most of the organic farmers that we take it to will have a stoned pad that we dump on. They use their loaders to turn the manure from time to time. Turning it keeps it active and the heat built up which is what breaks it down. Different types of manure will compost quicker than others. Shavings are very hard on the soil and take forever to compost. Straw is great, pelleted wood products compost much more quickly than shavings and the best I have found besides straw is cardboard bedding. I use the cardboard with my horses. It is totally dust free, is absorbant and makes the nicest compost you will see. I do compost my own horses manure but don't do any outside composting. The worms love the cardboard bedding and it is great for the soil. Besides giving manure to your neighbors you could set up a worm farm. Don't laugh, there are more of them around than you would guess. People sell worms on line and to pet shops. Any other questions feel free to email us directly at briarpny@dejazzd.com
