My horse won't jump

I had this horse who I got as a 4 year old. I worked with him for 4 years teaching him to jump. He loved it and we would go to shows and always be in the ribbons. About a year ago he came down with an airway disease and just refused to jump. I had not ridden him in about 8 months and I just started riding him again. The vet says that he is healed, but he still refuses to jump. I can't even get him over a cross rail. He just backs up. I know he's not scared because he will walk over the jumps. I'm thinking that maybe when he was jumping before it hurt and now he's afraid that his airways will hurt again. How do I get him to jump again?
