RE: RE: Question for Everyone - Starting a Hauling Business

Call Pennsylvania Dept of Transportation. Your needs will vary depending on what you want to do. You may need a class A commercial license, you will need a dot number and you may need apportioned registration for your vehicle if you are traveling out of state. As a commercial hauler you may also need a DOT physical. My husband and I do operate Briar Patch Achers and we do haul horses, local and some interstate. We do have class A commercial license and dot number we also carry cargo insurance which covers the horses you transport or other property that you transport. Call you insurance agent and see what type of liability insurance you will need. There is so much more to a hauling business than buying a trailer and pulling something down the road. We have had many years experience as commercial drivers having owned our own dump truck business. We have hauled horses up and down the east coast and when we didn't have a horse or two for the trip back we would arrange to pick up a motorcycle or somethng like that. We have hauled goats and once hauled 12 sheep to Florida. It paid the same as a horse so why not?!!! Just make sure you check with PennDot and your insurance agent, and you should do fine. There are alot of hauling sites on line that can link you up with all sorts of things to haul. Good luck with your new venture.
